The Concordia University Chicago track and field teams are back in action for their last regular season meet at the Aurora University's Spartan Grand Prix. This meet will take place at the Gately Indoor Track and Field Park in Chicago with a start time of 11 a.m.
"We are really excited for this Saturday's meet. For many, this is the culmination of our indoor season and a great test to see where we are heading into outdoor," said head coach Steve Belanger, who is in his second season at the helm of the program. "It will also be nice to see where the rest of the conference is as we haven't competed with them in a year."
There are a few student-athletes who continue to shine for the Cougars on the track. Senior Simone Wilson (Minneapolis, Minn.) is the leader on the track for the women. Last meet at the University of Indianapolis, she won the 400-meter dash along with a second-place finish in the 200-meter. Senior Kayla Armstrong (Chicago, Ill.), who received All-American honors last season, will make her debut for the 2021 season during this meet.
On the field for the women, senior Cassandra Garza (Grafton, Wis.) has been capturing the headlines. She set a new school record during the shot put last week, and finished the highest of all the CUC women in the weight throw.
For the men, junior Gustavo Alvarez (Chicago, Ill.) leads the group. He beat his own school record in the pole vault and continues to be one of the best in the country in this event. Teammate Jaylen Glass (Merrillville, Ind.) also is a strong contender in the pole vault, finishing in the spot behind Alvarez in almost every meet this season.
On the track, sophomore Ernest Bogart (Pfluegerville, Texas) has been at the forefront. The distance runner made an impact in the 800-meter as he finished in the top half of the competition in last weekend's meet. Freshman Malik Spencer (Flint, Mich.) added to the team's success in the sprints last weekend, while senior Maximilian Woywod (Berwyn, Ill.) is also expected to contribute to the team's success in the sprints.
The meet is expected to start at 11 a.m. A live stream is available at
