Kenosha, Wis. – It was a successful trip up north for the Concordia University of Chicago women's track and field team on Saturday, with a handful of standout performances that led to the team taking fifth place out of the nine competing schools.
In her first race since taking home the first national championship in school history, senior Simone Wilson (Minneapolis, Minn.) was victorious in the 400 meter finals, beating the next closest competitor by more than four seconds. She also placed fourth in the 200 meter finals.
Wilson was one of three Cougars to finish in the top 10 of the 400 meter, joined by freshman Daisia Wilson (Belleville, Ill.) (eight) and sophomore Diana Almazan (Berwyn, Ill.) (ninth).
Junior Lora Haupt (Northville, Mich.) proved that records are in fact made to be broken, setting a new school record on the pole vault with a height of 3.05 meters, good enough for second place in the event.
For the second time this year, junior Zahra Sammour (Berwyn, Ill.) placed first in the triple jump with a mark of 11.26 meters. She also finished fifth in the long jump finals, with freshman Brooklyn Gromko also placing in the top ten.
Senior Madeline Bobinski (Des Plaines, Ill.) also had an impressive day, finishing third in the shot put with a mark of 12.07 meters.
The team will have less than a week of rest before returning to action this Friday, Jan. 21, at the Snow Day Invitational hosted by North Central. The meet is set to begin at 4:00 p.m.
