River Forest, Ill. — With spring seasons now in full swing, there is no shortage of action in the world of Concordia University Chicago Athletics.
Four members of the CUC women's track and field team will head to Winston Salem, N.C., to compete in the 2022 NCAA Indoor Championships. Graduate student Simone Wilson (Minneapolis, Minn.) and senior Kayla Armstrong (Chicago, Ill.) are once again taking on the national stage after shining at the Outdoor Championships last May.
Wilson won the school's first National Championship at that event, and she will look to replicate that performance this year as she competes in the 400-meter. Armstrong will also compete in the 400m in addition to the 200. She placed third in both events at nationals a season ago.
Junior Zahra Sammour (Berwyn, Ill.) and graduate student Madeline Bobinski (Des Plaines, Ill.) are also heading to the meet following fantastic indoor seasons.
Sammour will compete in the triple jump, an event she has dominated all season long. On the other hand, Bobinski will look to replicate her NACC Championship performance in shot put, where she set a new championship and school record with her mark of 13.47 meters.

The CUC men's volleyball team is coming off a successful week, picking up a pair of conference wins in their three matches. They swept Rockford University in convincing fashion at home on Wednesday night, allowing the Regents to score just 33 points over three sets.
The team then hit the road for the weekend, kicking things off with another sweep on Friday night over St. Norbert College. The highlight of the night came from junior Colby Campbell (Brookfield, Ill.), who broke the school record for most blocks in a season after his five-block performance.
His 46 blocks broke the previous record set by Ryan Felbinger in 2019 (44).
Following Friday's match, the team stayed on the road to battle Marian University on Saturday night, falling 3-1 to the Sabres.
With the successful week, the Cougars moved to 3-3 in conference play. They'll be off this week, but will return to action next Wednesday, March 16, at 7 p.m., when they take on Illinois Tech at Geiseman Gymnasium.
Sunday marked a historic day for CUC Athletics, as its STUNT team competed for the first time in program history. The team traveled to Alma, Mich., to take on Alma and Olivet College in a doubleheader.
After falling to defending National Champion Alma in the opener, the team rebounded for their first-ever win over Olivet in the second game, defeating Comets 13-5.
They'll take two weeks off before hosting their first-ever home game on Sunday, March 20, at 3 p.m.
The CUC softball team also began their season last week, heading to The Dome in Rosemont, Ill., for a doubleheader battle with Lake Forest College. The Cougars dropped both games by scores of 5-3 and 5-4.
Trailing by two in the sixth inning of the second game, junior Becky Pieroni (Montgomery, Ill.) smacked a game-tying homer to dead center, reminding everyone why she was an All-American a season ago.
Following the game, the team packed their bags to head to sunny Florida for their first spring trip in two years. They picked up their first win of the season in their first game of the trip on Sunday morning, defeating Bluffton University 2-0. Senior Holly Bathje (Davis Junction, Ill.) went the distance for the Cougars, striking out five and issuing zero walks in seven shutout innings.
It's a busy week in Florida coming up, with doubleheaders scheduled for Monday, Wednesday and Friday.
Also in Florida for the week is the CUC baseball team. Their week in the Sunshine State began on Saturday with a 2-1 win over Cornell College. After an elite pitching battle for much of the game, it was junior Colton Wallace (Hampshire, Ill.) who provided the difference maker with a solo shot off the scoreboard in the eighth.
They played a much different type of game on Sunday, falling 9-7 to Penn State Abington. Junior Christian Jacob (Scottsdale, Ariz.) was solid in the loss, going 3-4 with two RBIs.
With the first two games of their trip in the book, the team will now play five more times between Monday and Saturday before returning home.
The final spring season to get underway last week was women's lacrosse, who traveled down to Bloomington, Ill., to take on Illinois Wesleyan University on Sunday. In their first game under Head Coach Fran Meyer, the Cougars fell 15-7.
Junior Rylee Orenstein (Walnut Creek, Calif.) shined for the Cougars, netting four of their seven goals.
It's a big week ahead, as they'll play at Elmhurst Wednesday night at 7 p.m., before home games on Saturday and Sunday. Both Saturday's game against Kalamazoo College and Sunday's against DePauw University will begin at 2 p.m.
Finally, the men's lacrosse team will end their two week break this Saturday with their first home game of the season against Earlham College. The home opener is scheduled for 11 a.m.
