GLEN ELLYN, ILL. — Concordia University Chicago women's tennis battled throughout a Sunday exhibition matchup with College of DuPage (COD), earning a pair of wins in doubles and four victories in singles play and the team's first win of the season.
DOUBLES
The Cougars opened doubles competition with a strong performance at No. 3, where Brianna Bentz (Whitehall, Mich.) and Aura Cortez-Cali (Berwyn, Ill.) cruised to a 6-1 victory. At No. 1 doubles, Amelia Engelman (McKinney, Texas) and Amirah Shakir (Dekalb, Ill.) pushed their opponents to a tiebreak before falling 7-6, while Sarah Gustafson (Merrill, Wis.) and Abigail Krueger (Brookfield, Ill.) dropped their No. 2 doubles match, 6-4, giving COD the doubles point.
SINGLES
CUC responded with a strong showing in singles competition, collecting four wins across the six flights. Engelman led the way at No. 2 singles with a dominant 6-2, 6-1 victory, while Shakir followed with a 6-0, 6-2 sweep at No. 3. At No. 4 singles, Krueger added another straight-set win, defeating Martina Ulloa 6-3, 6-1. Cortez-Cali completed the Cougars' singles victories with a decisive 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 6. Gustafson battled at No. 5 singles, taking the opening set 6-0 before dropping the second set 7-6 and ultimately falling in a 10-8 super tiebreaker. At No. 1 singles, Bentz also battled against Manuela Sus before falling 6-2, 6-1. The Cougars' four singles victories highlighted a strong effort in the individual portion of the matchup, with CUC earning wins at Nos. 2, 3, 4 and 6 singles, securing the 4-3 victory.
