Scarlet Hawks Pull Away in the Second Half to Take the Game from the Cougars

CHICAGO, Ill. – Under the lights of Stuart Field, the Concordia University Chicago (CUC) women's soccer team took on the Illinois Tech Scarlet Hawks. The Cougars kept the game tight in the first half, but a big offensive push in the second half for Illinois Tech saw them take the game, 6-0.

Inside the Box
Naomi Gonzales (Santa Rosa, Calif.) protected the net for 74 minutes, collecting nine saves.
Katelyn Wagner (Lagrange, Ky.) stepped in for the final 16 minutes and amassed 11 saves.
America Garcia (Las Vegas, Nev.) took the Cougars' lone shot of the night.

First Half
  • The Scarlet Hawks put the pressure on the Cougars immediately, getting the ball forward. Just over two minutes into the game, Illinois Tech was able to capitalize on a slotted ball in the box to make it 1-0.
  • Off the kickoff, the Cougars worked their way up the field but the cross in would go over the endline for a Scarlet Hawk goal kick.
  • In the 18th minute, Gonzales showed her skill in net, pushing a hard shot over the bar to deny the Scarlet Hawks a second goal.
  • The Cougars remained primarily on the defense, but did enough to stop Illinois Tech's advances, clearing the ball out of danger.
  • With just over 10 minutes left, Illinois Tech lobbed the ball across the field to an oncoming forward. They got their touch around Gonzales, but quick teamwork from the Cougar defense kept the ball out of the net.

Second Half
  • The Cougars came out strong in the second half, quickly getting the ball up the field into their attacking third but couldn't get the final touch and the Scarlet Hawks got away unscathed.
  • Garcia took the Cougars' first shot of the game in the 52nd minute but it went wide of the goal.
  • Illinois Tech found their footing and came back down the field. Gonzales made the diving save on the first shot in the 53rd minute, but a Scarlet Hawk running in got the rebound and put it in to double the lead.
  • Another goal for the Scarlet Hawks came two minutes later with a low ball into the near post.
  • Quickly after, Gonzales made another diving save, but the rebound once again went to an Illinois Tech forward, and the Scarlet Hawks went up 4-0.
  • Gonzales got big in the 60th minute, blocking the Scarlet Hawk forward's path and denying another opportunity. Five minutes later, Gonzales made another strong save.
  • The overwhelming pressure continued for the Cougars as the Scarlet Hawks knocked in another goal in the 66th minute. Illinois Tech made it 6-0 five minutes later.
  • Wagner came into the game and immediately got to work, making two saves in just under two minutes.
  • Continuing to be a brick wall, Wagner continued to be a brick wall, making diving saves to prohibit anymore goals for the Scarlet Hawks. Wagner made a fantastic save right at the end of the game, but the damage was done and CUC fell 6-0.
