RIVER FOREST, Ill. – It was a full week of Concordia University Chicago (CUC) athletics. Check out what our teams have been up to.
Women's Basketball (5-9, 3-3)
The women's basketball team split a pair of Northern Athletic Collegiate Conference (NACC) games this week.
The Cougars faced off against Rockford University on January 7. CUC was hot from the first whistle and took the game 68-54, including 13 three-pointers from seven different shooters.
Grace King (Fairland, Ind.) led the squad with 15 rebounds and 13 points, picking up her second double-double of the season. With a career-high and team-leading 10 assists,
Kira Holliday (Roselle, Ill.) picked up her first career double-double, adding 13 points.
Ai Yonemura (Yachiyo, Chiba-Japan) was the third Cougar to nab a team leading 13 points. Also hot on offense,
Jocelyn Chammas (Chicago, Ill.) recorded a career-high 11 points.
On January 10, the Cougars traveled to Wisconsin to face a tough Milwaukee School of Engineering (MSOE). CUC put up a strong fight, but fell to the Raiders, 83-66. Yonemura led with 22 points, two rebounds, and two assists.
Naveya Jackson (Sun Prairie, Wis.) followed up with 19 points, three rebounds, and an assist. Chammas and Holliday each tallied seven points.
The Cougars play two NACC games this week. On Wednesday, January 14, CUC hits the road to take on Illinois Tech at 7:00 pm. Then on Saturday, January 17, the Cougars are home at 1:00 pm, hosting Lakeland University.
Men's Basketball (5-9, 4-3)
The men's basketball team played twice this week.
On January 7, CUC hosted Rockford. It was an intense battle, but the Cougars fell 65-52. Leading the Cougars was
Aaron Brown (Joliet, Ill.), who scored 14 points and recorded eight rebounds.
Darrian Williams (Garland, Texas) also registered double digits with 10 points while also adding five assists and three steals.
It was then off to Wisconsin on January 10 to face the MSOE Raiders. The Cougars never gave up but wound up on the losing end of the 99-68 scoreline. Brown once again led the team, totaling 20 points and a team-high eight rebounds.
Matthew Guthrie (Carlyle, Ill.) picked up 10 points, four rebounds, and two assists. Following closely behind was
Ryker Johnson (Fond du Lac, Wis.), who ended the game with nine points, four rebounds, and two assists.
This week the Cougars will continue working through the conference slate. They will host Illinois Tech on Wednesday, January 14, at 7:00 pm. Then on Saturday, January 17, CUC will host Lakeland. Tipoff is set for 3:15 pm.
Track & Field
Both track & field teams headed to Chicago, Ill. to compete at the Phoenix Invite, hosted by University of Chicago.
The men's team finished third of five teams.
Vincent Scarnato (Pottstown, Pa.) earned a gold medal in the 400m with a time of 53.00. In the 200m,
Austin Knight (Forest Park, Ill.) secured silver with a time of 22.83.
Jordyn Boatman (Elmwood Park, Ill.) claimed bronze in the long jump with a leap of 6.15m. Coming in just behind Boatman was
Jayden Taylor (Southfield, Mich.), who registered a leap of 6.09m. In the shot put,
Brandon Montford (Fairburn, Ga.) took fifth with a mark of 12.97m.
The women's team finished fourth of five teams.
Ashley Vasquez (Riverside, Ill.) led the Cougars with a silver medal performance in the 400m, running a 1:05.32.
Addi McKee secured fifth with a personal best time of 1:11.84.
Taking third in the 60m hurdles was
Devynn Woywod (Berwyn, Ill.) with a time of 12.78.
Madison Hipshire (Riverview, Mich.) finished fifth in the 200m with a time of 28.78. In the high jump,
Harmonie Cooper (Chicago, Ill.) finished fourth, tying her personal best leap of 1.48m. Coming in fifth place was
Noor Sammour (Berwyn, Ill.) with a leap of 1.43m.
The Cougars' next meet will be the Heenan Invite on Saturday, January 17. It will be hosted by North Central College in Naperville, Ill.
Men's Volleyball (0-0, 0-0)
The Cougars kick off their season on Thursday, January 15. CUC will host Illinois Wesleyan University. The match is set to start at 7:00 pm.
